Sweaters and Sweatshirts

This department starts in September and ends in April, and it splits by how much you want on your neck. A crew sits low and layers under a jacket. A half zip closes to the chin on a cold morning and opens by noon. A hood is a hood.

Weight matters more than the name. A lightweight knit pullover is a spring garment. A fleece-backed sweatshirt is a winter one, and both are called sweaters in the titles, so read the fabric line rather than the word.

Oversized sweaters are cut to be worn over something, and they look wrong worn tight. If you want a fitted sweater, the ribbed ones are the fitted ones.

None of these are technical layers. They do not wick, they do not pack small, and they are not for a hike in the rain. They are for the walk to the coffee shop, which is what they were cut for.
